Trevor Mercer
was born in Newfoundland in 58 where from an early age he developed
a passion for many aspects of nature stemming from his exposure
to the goings on in the environment .
By his teens
he was working with wood and other materials and received a set
of small chisels at the age of fifteen . He immediately started
to teach himself how to use them and his first carvings were ,
in the round ,3-D pieces concerning animals and people using a
variety of woods .
Trevor entered
the Alberta College of Art and Design ( 81 to 85 ) in Calgary
,Alberta where he completed a double major in sculpture and glass
blowing .
He persued
contemporary sculpture making , using urban and industrial materials
to reinterpret sciences interpretation of nature being inspired
by his studies in particle physics , astronomy and cosmology.
During this
period, he developed the high relief in wood format from seeing
deep stone sculptures on Greek architecture of antiquity through
his Art History classes. He saw the high relief as a way of conveying
the entire environment that is home to specific predator - prey
interactions .
Trevor has
produced numerous carved wood commissions for businesses and individuals
which include large signs for restaurants and carved front doors
for private homes.
Trevor continues
to persue both his carving and contemporary sculpture practice
, always learning , pushing his materials to their limits , challenging
the nature of perceived reality.
